Blog entry: Self Discovery

I believe the passage uses the ship on the horizon to a man's dream because the horizon is the highest point. You can not touch the horizon. Also you can't reach the horizon. I believe that men hold their dreams to those standards. I believe that men hold the dreams up to those limits. I believe that men think that they will never be able to fulfill their dreams to the standards that they want to. I believe that men have doubt about their dreams. I believe that some men hold such high standards for themselves just to see if they can reach them. I believe that some men are successful and some men aren't. I believe the important part is that you attempted to reach those standards.

Blog Entry: Self Discovery

I believe that their are differences between the dreams of men and women. I believe that at the end of the day both men and women want to be successful. I believe that men and women go through different things to fulfill their dreams. The book "Their eyes were watching God" say that women forget all those things they don't want to remember, and remember everything they don't want to forget. I believe that is true. I believe that women don't beat around the bush. In my opinion women get straight to the point. According to the book I believe it is saying that men work all their lives to fulfill their dreams. I believe its like that for men and women. I believe that men try harder than women. Also that women gets it done before the men do. I believe that both genders work very hard to fulfill their dreams. I believe that once their dreams come true they will be satisfied and they will be able to say that their hard work payed off.

Their eyes were watching God:20

"The Muck meant Tea Cake and Tea Cake wasnt their."

Tea Cake had married Janie and they moved to the muck. They started their new lives together thier. Tea Cake died and Janie wanted to leave the muck because Tea Cake want their anymore. Janie wanted to go back to eatonville. Janie had giving away everything their accept a garden that Tea Cake had started. Janie kept that in remeberance of Tea Cake she loved him very much. She felt like it was her time to leave the muck.

"The day of the gun, and the bloody body and the court house came and commenced to sing a sobbing sigh out of every corner."

Janie was home thinking about the life she had with Tea Cake. She was thinking about their last moments together. She was thinking about the fact that the gun she had killed him. Even though he had an infectionus diease she still pulled the trigger. Janie was thinking about how she was holding Tea Cake and the blood rushing out of his body. Janie was sad about the way everything turned out.

Their eyes were watching God:19

"Tea Cake had been working several hours when the thought of Janie worrying about him made him desperate."

After Tea Cake had gotten bit by that dog ha wasn't doing very well. Janie would always worry about him. She would pay close attention to how he acted. He also would think crazy thoughts. Tea Cake was worried about Janie as well. He thought that she was cheating on him. He would always act suspicious when he got home. Even though Janie was worried, Tea Cake was worried as well.

"About the middle of the fourth week Tea Cake came home complaining about his head."

Tea Cake sickness was getting worse. His head was hurting very bad. He was going crazy on the inside. He would wake up hungry. He wouldnt even be able to eat the food that was prepared for him. Tea Cake was mentally and physically ill. Tea Cake would say things he didnt mean to say. He would vomet and not be able to control it. Tea Cake sickness had got the best of him.

Their eyes were watching God: 18

"Going to high ground. Saw grass bloom."

There was an hurricane coming. Some of the towns people believed it and others didnt. Also some people prepared for the worst and some didnt do anything. People started to leave and Tea Cake and Janie was going to wait the storm out. Some people stayed for work. Their boss told them that if they left they wouldnt have work when they came back. Thats one of the main reasons why Tea Cake stayed. Alot of people went east and followed the indians.

" Several men collected at Tea Cake's house and sat around stuffing courage into each other ears."

Everyone went over to Tea Cake's house. Thats where men made final decisions to wheather their going to leave or stay in town. Some men decided to leave. Others like Tea Cake decided to stay because of work. They needed money. Also they thought that the storm would pass by and not cause any damage.

Their eyes were watching God: 17

"Janie is wherever ah wants to be. Dat's de kind uh wife she is and ah love her for it."

Tea Cake let Janie be free. He didnt tell her what she could and couldnt do. He treats her very good. He treats Janie very well. Tea Cake is disturbed when he hears that Mrs. Turner is trying to get Janie to talk to her brother. Tea Cake feels very offended by that but he does everything he can to defend his relationship with Janie.

"You tell Tea Cake he better be keerful ah dont swell up again."

Tea Cake and some others got into a fight at Mrs. Turner place. Tea Cake tired to clear up the cituation so that he could get on Mrs.Turner good side. They were gambling at Mrs.Turner's place. Then things got out of hand. A fight broke out. It invloved Tea Cake and another man. The other man threaten Tea Cake very well.
"Mrs. Turner was a milky sort of a woman that belonged to child-bed."

This quote describes Mrs. Turner. Often Tea Cake makes fun of her shape. Although Mrs. Turner was African American she described other African Americans as if they were animals. She made it seem like she was so much better than the other African Americans. Mrs. Turner had the attitude and hips of an African American women. Tea Cake said that she had been shaped by an cow that was kicking her from behind. Mrs. Turner had an confident attitude about who she was.

"Just like he had been sand papered down to a long oval mass. Tea Cake felt sorry for him without knowing why."

Tea Cake tried to make Mrs. Turner and her son jealous of him and Janie relationship. Tea Cake didnt really like Mrs. Turner. He knew that it was something about her he didnt like. He wanted to insalut Mrs. Turner and her son but he held that in. Instead he walked over towards them and started some conversation. He tried to make it seem like

Self Discovery Blog

Why are dreams and dreaming important to self-discovery.

The craziest thing about self discovery is that you don't know what journey you going to take to get their. You don't know the trials and tribulations your going to face. You can try to set your future up in one way and the out come looks totally different. When God gives you the ability to dream you never know what you can discover within that dream. People realize what they want to do in the future. Other realizes things that can change their lives for the good or bad. Some people are scared to be real with themselves. I believe that you cant be real with anyone else, if you cant be real with yourself. People have dreams all the time and have doubt in themselves about rather it can come true or not. Self discovery is a powerful thing. Self discovery can only happen if you allow it to happen. I believe that self discovery is a process that people have to go through. Also i believe that after the process of self discovery people tend to change. I think change is expected to happen after self discovery. If not then whats the point of self discovery. I believe that self discovery mean learning something new about yourself so you can better yourself for the future.

Their eyes were watching God:15

"Janie learned what it felt like to be jealous."

I believe this quote says alot about where Janie came from to where she is now. For a very long time people was always jealous of Janie. They were jealous of how she dressed, looked and the way she lived. Also they were jealous about how long her hair was. So for Janie to finally be jealous was very suprising. Janie has never to be the one to be jealous. Also Janie was jealous of Tea Cake and Nuckie. She thought they had something going on behind her back. Janie was shocked.

"A little seed of fear was growing into a tree."

This quote means that it was something within Tea Cake and Janie's realtionship that wasnt good. Nuckie was getting in the way of Janie and Tea Cake's marriage. Janie would see Nuckie playing and hitting on Tea Cake. She would even hit him then fall on him like she was playing. Tea Cake didnt think that Nuckie was doing anything bad. Janie had realized what Nuckie was doing all along. Janie had to put a stop to it.

Their eyes were watching God: 14

"Tea Cake's house was a magnet, the unauthorized center of the "job".

People would always go to Tea Cake house after work or even before work. They would meet in groups over there. Tea Cake would play his guitar for his friends to keep them entertianed. Also they would crack jokes. They would also talk about the money they made. People knew that Tea Cake was a good person from work. They had no problem meeting over his house. Soon their house was full of people every night. Also they would tell stories.

"Sometimes Janie would think of the old days in the big white house and the store and laugh to herself."

Janie life has changed in so many ways since she left Eatonville. The towns people would go crazy if they seen how she was living now. Janie doesnt have a problem with the way she lives now. The towns people would constantly talk about her. From her cloths to her living conditions. Also they would talk about her hair. Janie is happy about the life she has now with Tea Cake.

Their eyes were watching God: 12

"Jody classed me off. Ah didnt. Naw, Pheoby, Tea Cake aint draggin me off nowhere ah dont want tuh go."
Jody told Janie where she could and couldnt go. He also told her what she could and couldnt do. Jody gave Janie her limits. He treated her how he wanted to. He tried to run her life and for a little while he did. With Tea Cake, Janie was able to be free. He let her do what she wanted. Tea Cake didnt make her do things. He asked her first. He never made her do things she didnt want to do. Tea Cake never made Janie go outside of her character.

"All these old men dat settin around me is after the same thing."

I believe this quote says alot. Janie married a young man. She married Tea Cake. Some people believe that tea cake was after Janie's money. Janie believes that no matter the age of the man, he could still be after your money. Janie believes that their is nothing wrong with being with someone younger than you. They were talking about Janie's and Tea Cake's marriage when this comment was made. Janie replied that Tea Cake never asked her for any money.

Their eyes were watching God:13

"All she found out was that she was too old a vessel for new wine."

This quote is saying that Janie is too old to date or marry young men. Some people say that young men shouldnt be with old women. The women are known for being taken advantage of. Janie had gotten beat and learned that she wasnt fit for young men. She was beat because her husband wanted to let her know who the boss was in the marriage. After he beat her, she learned that he was too young for her.

"All the rest of the week Tea Cake was busy practising up on his dice."

Other than farming, Tea Cake would make some extra money to take care of him and Janie. Tea Cake would roll dice and win money. He could flip them on the rug, bare floor, and the bed. He was really excitied to win. Also he wanted to give Janie anything she wanted. He was very talented with dice. He would farm all day then go play dice. I believe it became an habit for him.

Their eyes were watching God:chapter 11 quotes

"At the newel post Janie whirled around and for the space of a thought she was lit up like a transfiguration."

Janie was in a comfrontable position where she wasnt afraid to smile. She was finally having fun again. She had began to trust who Tea Cake really was. She was very happy that nothing could mess that up. She was able to finally be free. Free of worries and fears for that moment. When she was there she was having a really good time. That time Janie was shinning and no one was going to burn that light out.

"The next thought buried her under tons of cold futility."

Janie went from having fun to doubting herself. Also doubting the good cituation she's in. Futility means lack of importance or purpose. Janie's night began to flush down the drain. She went back to the state of mind that she wasnt able to have fun. She started to feel as if Tea Cake was around her for the wrong reasons. She was thinking was it her wealth or was it her age that attached them to eachother. She didnt want to believe Tea Cake because he was so nice. She thought he was trying to get close for the wrong reasons.

Their eyes were watching God: chapter 10 quotes

"Tea cake wasnt strange. Seemed as if she had known him all her life."

Tea cake was a nice gentlemen. He made her laugh continiously. She had felt like she seen him before. He let her talk when she wanted to. Even though she had some worries about him. Also Janie wasnt rushing into a realtionship with him. He let her express her self. He didnt tell her what she could and could not do. He was the opposite of everything her husbands stood for. He was kind hearted. He seemed very respectable to her. He did things she thought was awsome.

"Tea Cake! So you sweet as all dat?"

This quote is imortant and funny. This quote stands out because throughout this book their has been no laughter and funny moments. She asked him was he as sweet as tea and cake since that was his name. He was funny as well by responding, saying "you better try me and see." At that moment Janie grew comfrontable and uncomfrontable at the same time. she smilied and frowned. she didnt know if this man was trying to run a game on her or not.

Their eyes were watching God:chapter 9

"She hated her grandmother and had hidden it from herself all these years under a cloak of pity."

I believe she hid the feelings of hating her grandmother for qa very long time. At first she could have thought her grandmother had her best intrest at heart. Also that her grandmother didnt care about her feelings. As long as Janie had a man with money, nanny felt good about it. Now that Janie is miserable with all of those things she realize how mad she really is. She has kept her feelings in for so long she doesnt know how to let them out. Janie hates her grandmother because she did what she thought was best instead of letting janie do what she thought was best for her. Also if Nanny had'nt made those decisions for her she would probaly be with someone she truly loves and care for. Janie has been through two marriages. One of them was set up by Nanny. So Janie feelings were hidden for a very long time about alot of things.

"Here Nanny had taken the biggest thing God ever made, the horizon-for no matter how far a person can go the horizon is still way beyond you."

I believe this quote says alot. It doesnt matter how hard you try, How successful you get its always something a person can never catch up to which is the horizon. The person can be very successful but if you dont have love for that success, you will be miserable. God made things that you cant even match up to. People try to believe that they can get as high as god. How are you going to do that if you cant catch up to the things that god made. The horizon is an awsome thing to reach for. The sad part is that you will never reach it.

Their eyes were watching God:chapter 8 quotes

"Why must Joe be so mad with her for making him look so small when he did it to her all the time?"

Joe is furious at this moment in the book. He looks dependent. He cant seem to do very much on his own. Now Janie is their controlling things and it makes him look very low. As if he's not able to make any decisions on his own. Like he need someone to talk for him. This is exactly how Janie felt their whole marriage. Karma is very bad. Now that Janie has control Joe is afriad of the things she mite say or do. He never says sorry about how he made her feel. Maybe he had'nt realize what he had done to her. Now she was going to have the power to do what she felt without him approving or disapproving it. They got into continiously arguments though.

"Come heah people! Jody is dead. Mah husband is gone from me."

This moment for the towns people was devastating. Even though Janie knew this time would come she was shocked at first. Then she was proud. She wasnt proud of the death. She was proud that she could finally let her body and soul free. She could let her emotions out. She was able to finally wear her hair down like she wanted. She felt like she was free from being tied down for a long time. She did show respect at his furneral by looking how he would approve. The towns people thought that she wasnt sad that he died. She didnt pay attention to what they said because they dont know how she felt at that moment.

Their eyes were watching God: chapter 7 quotes

"Joe wasnt so young as he used to be. There was already something dead about him."

This quote is very powerful. It was something that joe was losing. Joe got older and his body was wearing down. Joe had kidney faliure. Joe couldnt do everything like he used to. It's amazing how she knew it was something wrong before actually finding out. I believe she waitied for a day like this to come. Where Joe would try to continue to control everything but didnt have the enegry to do it. Not saying that she was happy about his condition, but that he couldnt control everything she did anymore. she felt a since of realease. When she said that it was something dead about him his personality had changed. His physical appearance had changed and he moved very slow. I believe that she felt that maybe she could take advantage of him like he did her for 7 years.

"The years took all the fight out of Janie's face. For a while she thought it was gone from her soul."

This quote stands for alot of things. This quote says that Janie has aged. She feels like she will never get to express herself now. So she has to decide if she will give up completely or continue to fight. She thought the fight had left her soul because she put up with the humbleness for a very long time. She thought she would never be set free. Janie might have been under strict conditions in marriage. Not that she's out of it she's set free and feel very happy.

Their eyes were watching god:chapter 6 quotes

"Janie did what she had never done before, that is, thrust herself into the conversation."

Janie had finally let out how she feels. she had held in so much greif and madness. She had held those words in so so wouldnt start any conflict. When she spoke out it was out of anger and all of the holding in she did. She was very brave for finally saying how she felt. At that moment she had realized that she was'nt in love anymore. when she finally spoke out feelings ran out of her body that was trapped inside for a very long time.

''Somebody got to think for women , they sho don't think none theirselves."

The quote is about how dependant women are. Women get treated as lower than men so thats how they act.Women cant interact in conversations so their husbands have to do all the talking for them. You never hear the woman thoughts or let her fully express her feelings. Women can think for themselves, their just wanted to work in the house. their suppose to let their husbands handle everything else. Thats how it seems in this book with this quote. Women on get to show half of their intrest in things because men think that women shouldnt have rights to speak about anything. If they do get to add anything its very little and not taken into consideration.

Their eyes were watching God: chapter 5 quotes

"Thank yuh fuh yo compliments, but mah wife don't know nothin bout no speech makin Ah never married her for nothin lak dat. She's uh woman and her place is in de home.''

This quote is very intersting. This quote puts an woman in her place. It tells a woman what she can and cant do. This quote says that women are good for something. Their good for what there husband want them to do. This quote takes the independce from a woman. It tells a woman what she can do. Also what she has the power to do. The woman becomes a woman to take care of the house. She's not able to work anyhere else but the house. The woman's best place is the house. The husband wanted to marry her because of her good work in the house.

"Take for instance that new house of his. It had two stories with porches, with bannisters and such things. The rest of the town looked like servants.''

I believe that Jody made himself seem better than the other towns people. Everything he had, had to be upscale. The towns people couldnt have the things he had or he would have to get something better. The house he had put the rest of the houses in the town to shame. His wife wasnt allowed to interact with the towns people. He did democracy for the towns people but things still ended up going his way.The towns people catered to him like he was lord. When you say that the rest of the town looked like servants that opens up a world of differences. That mean that the towns people couldnt do what him and his wife were able to do. The towns people wasnt able to drive and live like they were living.

Their eyes were watching God:chapter 4

"You married? You aint hardly old enough to be weaned."

This quote means that she's not old enough to be married. She's to young to be married. As if the marriage is holding her down. Like she's not old enough to stand up for herself.Weaned means to withdraw from some object, habit, form of enjoyment. I believe this quote is saying that she's not able to enjoy her life becase of her marriage. Like she's not old enough to be on her own or make her own decisions. I dont believe that marriage holds a person down completely from doing what they are determined to do.

"Her old thoughts were going to come in handy now, but the new words would have to be made and said to fit them."

I believe this quote means she can have a fresh start with things. The thoughts she had previously thought about can help her now that she's in a position she wants to be in. The things she set out to do she can do now because of the type of enviroment and seeting she's in. She can develop the things she wanted in the past and also do some new things as well. She could think new things and actually get started on them. she could focus on the present that used to be her future. she can do things she has always wanted to do.

Their eyes were watching god:chapter 3 quotes

"Their are years that ask questions and years that answer. Janie had no chance to know things so she had to ask."

I believe that this quote means that Janie could have gotten more things accomplished over the years than she did. The years are saying where did the time go to get those thins done. Also is it to late to start on those things she did get a chance to do. I believe that if the time came back to her she would have accomplished more than she did.
Also the years are asking what will she do in the following years. Time never stops for anyone. She will get a chance to do some of the things she missed out on. She had some things to show for. she had done something over the years. She had to ask to see if she had anything to show for.

"Ah want things sweet with mah marriage lak when you sit under a pear tree and think. Ah..."

The pear tree is where she went to solve problems and the things she was going through. Also the pear tree is where she goes for peace and to be by herself. Janie would sit under a pear tree and think. she would think about the things she have done. She would think about the things she had to do. she would also think about the good and bad decisions she made. Sometimes she would even cry. Janie saw her marriage a certian way. She seen actual love and commitment in a marriage. She would sit under the pear tree and see her life flash in front of her. Janie actual want the things she sees under the pear tree. She wants these things bad enough to cry over it.

Their eyes were watching God: chapter 2 quotes

"Janie saw her life like a great tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things done and undone."

I believe this quote is based off of the things that Janie went through over her life time so far. Also the things she accomplished and didnt have a chance to accomplish so far. Janie saw her life as good so far. She might have went through the hurt and pain. She also might not have had the chance to accomplish the things she desired. That their were some obstacles she had to go through to make it where she was now. She had to suffer without parents.
Also how she left and came back to Eatonville. She had to deal with the men and women of the town talking about her. How she reflected on her life and the important things that went on in her life.

"Nanny's head and face looked like the standing roots of some old tree that had been torn awat by a storm."

This quote says thay nanny is very tired. I chose this quote because it gives an description of how it looks whcih says alot. Nanny first is not young. so she's probaly very tired. For nanny's face to look like standing roots of an old tree is horrible. that means that nanny is more than tired. She's stressed out, problay having personal problems. This quote becomes even worse when it says that her face looks like it had been torn away by a storm. that means that nanny looked very bad.

Their Eyes Were watching God Quotes Chapter 1

"Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board. For some they come with tide."

I believe this quote means that some men try very hard to accomplish something in life. As if they try for a very long time and still have ways to go. This quote also means that all things doesnt come easy. You do have to put work in to get success out. For some men it comes with conquences. With other men it may come a little easier.
I also believe this quote mean that some men sign up for things and never finish it. You have to be patient and really want what you signed up for. That your dream or wish may be far away but one day it will come. When that day comes your hard work and dedication will pay off. The fact that you didnt give up will pay off. That's what i believe this quote means.

"They, the men, were saving with their mind what they lost with the eye"

I believe this quote means that the men were being serious about what they were doing. This time they were going to do what was right instead of what looked right. Also i believe this means that the men were focusing on whats happening today instead of what they wanted for the next 5 years. I believe they were going to think before they jumped to conclusions about decisions that had to be made. Also that the men were saving what they had'nt already messed up.
Also that the men made decisions together. Instead of one person doing all the talking, they all had some input with their present plans. Also that the men didnt get caught up with eachother as much. they were able to make indiviual decisions that were beneficial for them

4/11/10 blog assignment

My short term dream is to receive either a full or partial scholarship to a University of my choice. My dreams are to become and F.B.I agent or D.E.A officer. Also I am considering becoming a lawyer. My second dream is to be very wealthy and able to give away to charities. Those things have been my dream for at least 4 years now. I want my job to be surrounded by saving lives.
I want to receive a scholarship to a university of my choice. A lot of the time that’s all I think about. Also ways to better myself so that I can receive that full scholarship. I find myself crying sometimes because I want it so bad. People always say that actions speak louder than words. That’s why I’m working on the scholarship now. I’m trying to better myself because I know that there is more than one person who wants the same thing I do. The only real difference is who wants it the most.
A lot of people say that college is the way out. The way out means leaving where you are to become better. Also learning new things you didn’t before. So that you wont have to return to how your life style was. People go to college to find themselves. I’m going to college to find success. I believe that I am destined for greatness. I believe that my greatness will partially show through the degree I earn in college. I believe it’s the next step I take with the degree that will make me even greater. If I receive a full schlorship those are things I am going to do. I will be successful in the future.
Once I arrive to college there are three things I’m considering studying as my major. Between Law, Criminal Justice and criminology are the majors I plan on studying. I want to study those majors because I believe that I can get people to realize how serious police officers are. Also that the decisions that they make are life risking. The brave thing about police officers is that they risk their lives for people they don’t know. For you to be able to save someone’s life and not expect a reward is an awesome thing. Police officers are brave people and they don’t need a gun to prove that. Also I believe that through those majors I can save and change people lives.

I want to become a lawyer because they help people in a different type of way. They help people realize their mistakes. Even if a lawyer can’t prove your innocence the important part is that your learn from your mistakes. Also you learn the correct way to do things. Also I want to become an lawyer because you can’t be lazy at all. Lawyers work all the time. Some people say that if you are lazy don’t consider being a lawyer. Lawyers have to work all the time to win the case that their working. I believe that in order to be a lawyer you have to love what you do. You can’t be in the job just for the money. I believe that if you’re in it just for the money you’re going to half do the job. I also believe that if you’re a lawyer you can’t half do the job. The job is either done the right way or no way at all.
If you’re a real lawyer then it doesn’t really matter how much money you make. That doesn’t mean you have to be underpaid. The lawyers who are the most committed to what they do end up with the most money at the end of the day. If I become a lawyer I want to be dedicated. I want to really love what I do. I want to learn how to be a strong defender. Theses are my dreams and short term goals.
